Abstract

This thesis examines the transformation of authority in self-managing organizations by means of a literature review. Building on classical theories of authority and more recent organizational research, it explores how authority shifts from formal, position-based structures toward informal, relational, and expertise-driven forms. As organizations increasingly integrate self-management into their structures, it becomes important to investigate the implications this fundamental change has. The main findings of this thesis are that authority becomes informal, elusive, and something that can be lost at any time when transitioning toward self-management.
